Pop goes the weasel, `cuz the weasel goes pop
[MC Serch]
Hip-hop, got turned into hit pop
the second a record was number one on the pop charts
For those that get on heart that got it`s start in the ghetto
Let no one forget about the hard part
Now in ninety-one we got a new brand, a new band
lookin like the same old Klan
Same old thieves that skeez so we gotta make sure
that real rap has got to endure
It’s official, hip-hop is played out! For the first time in his-story the entire Billboard Top Ten Singles list is composed of tracks by Black groups. (I guess we’ll count the Black Eyed Peas as a Black group.) Even more amazing is that 9 of the songs are by rappers. I think this is a clear sign that it’s time for us to move to the next, underground, music movement. Surely this marks some kind of hip-hop bubble, a la a stock market bubble. Here’s the current top 10:
- Baby Boy: Beyoncé Featuring Sean Paul
- Shake Ya Tailfeather: Nelly, P Diddy & Murphy Lee
- Get Low: Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz Featuring Ying Yang Twins
- Right Thurr: Chingy
- Frontin’: Pharrell Featuring Jay-Z
- Damn!: YoungBloodZ Featuring Lil Jon
- P.I.M.P.: 50 Cent
- Into You: Fabolous Featuring Tamia/Ashanti
- Stand Up: Ludacris Featuring Shawnna
- Where Is The Love?: Black Eyed Peas
But on the real, I’m very surprised that this feat has never been accomplished before. I wonder what, if anything, this means for the music industry. I imagine KRS-ONE is smiling given his lyrics in the song Hip-Hop Rules, and Sex & Violence:
commercial rap now run tings again
R&B now run tings again
country music you’re lookin at your end
